Born: November 28, 1988
Police Dog certified as a Deputy Sheriff Kai was shot while trying to subdue Gerald Cox, 37, Washington State, who was accused of threatening his estranged wife in McCammon and then threatening officers and himself a few hours later near Swan Lake. Officers decided the suspect had to be stopped before citizens' safety was risked. Kai was to knock him to the ground by jumping on his back. However, the suspect whirled around as Kai leapt, and shot the dog in the head. Officers then shot Cox twice in the arm. |

Constable Stoddard was attacked by three men after breaking up a disturbance earlier in the evening at a bar located in the former mining community of Beaver Canyon. After the bar incident, the three men left, later approaching Constable Stoddard outside the bar. Two of the men began speaking friendly to Stoddard and shaking his hand, at which point, the third suspect came from his hiding position and attacked Stoddard with a straight razor. He almost completely severed Stoddard's head, imediately killing him. Stoddard was survived by his wife and four children. |

Years of Service: two days Sheriff Goodall from LaGrande, Oregon was sent with an arrest warrant for Mr. Cottner and Morgan for the murder of Clay Miller. Since Walter was an acquaintance of Mr. Cottner the Boise County Sheriff Lawrence deputized Walter Coffin the morning of April 17, 1883 to assist in the search. They proceeded to a cabin in Boise County the following day where Cottner and his accomplice Morgan were known to be staying. The sheriff sent Coffin ahead and he was shot down at 4pm on Wednesday before Sheriff Goodall could come to his aid. |

Deputy Palmer went home and was found by his wife around 8:00 am, dead from a heart attack. He was still in his uniform. |

FONTAINE COOPER - Killed - November 25, 1935 Age: 35 years old

Service: 12 years Shot and killed while attempting to arrest a kidnap/murder suspect, Douglas Van Vlack, after a high speed chase. He was shot with a .38 automatic pistol in the right eye, and died instantly. A Twin Falls deputy Sheriff Henry Givens was also shot by the suspect, and died later. This was four years before the official designation of the "Idaho State Police", and Fontaine Cooper was a state "traffic policeman" under what was called the Bureau of Constabulary.

On Agust 4, 1901, William Steffen rode into Moscow on horseback. He shot and killed the town doctor and wounded a storekeeper. Shortly after, he met with Depty Cool and shot cool off his horse. Steffen was killed later in the day after a shoot out with a posse. Deputy Cool died August 5, 1901.

His Chevrolet Blazer patrol vehicle struck a patch of black ice, went out of control and rolled over at 1:45 a.m. Deputy Helsley, 25, had served with the Lewis County Sheriff's Office for six months, and has been in law enforcement for a total of three years. He is survived by his 2-month-old son and his girlfriend. |

HAROLD J. MOSMAN - Killed - August 9, 1921

Harold J. Mosman was a motorcycle patrol officer for the City of Lewiston in 1921. Mosman was on duty on August 7, 1921 and was attempting to contact a physician to assist R.E. Fowler and his son Albert. The Fowlers were drowning victims at Lewiston Beach on the Clearwater river. Mosman was passing a car on Main Street near Snake River Avenue when his motorcycle struck the street car rails. Mosman was thrown from his motorcycle and struck his head on the street. Mosman was transported to St. Joseph's Hospital where he died 35 hours later as a result of his injuries.
GORDON A. HARRIS - Killed - October 21, 1924

On October 21, 1924, four men robbed the Vollmer Bank in Craigmont, Idaho. Lewiston Traffic Officer Gordon Harris and part-time game warden Fields Bishop went to the Waha-Lewiston road to wait for the bank robbers. The car carrying the four bank robbers stopped at the road block and when Officer Harris ordered the suspects out of the car, he was shot through the heart with a high powered rifle. Even though mortally wounded, Officer Harris returned fire with is pistol, striking one of the robbers. The robbers fled the scene but were later captured.

ROBERT S. WALTON - Killed March 8, 1934

Years of Service: 3 years Robert Walton, Minidoka County Sheriff was killed as he investigated a disturbance call. Sheriff Walton was shot once in the heart by LeRoy Utley, as he approached the front door of Utley's home. Utley also killed his brother-in-law, and wounded his mother during the altercation. He was captured the following day, and committed suicide in a jail cell after giving a complete confession. |

Years of Service: 30 years William Philpot, who had been Chief of Police in Orofino for the past 28 years, was killed instantly when his car was sideswiped by another vehicle on U.S. Highway 12. Samuel S. Vincent, a companion officer who was riding with Chief Philpot, sustained minor injuries in the accident. The two officers were traveling to a certification test being given under a new Federal Aid police program at Lewis-Clark State College. |

Years of Service: 14 months J. C. Sherrod was a successful Democratic nominee for Sheriff when he was shot by an unknown gunman while investigating suspicious circumstances. He observed a male peeking into a house, through the front door, and the man ran around the house when Sherrod approached. He went around the other side and was shot in the stomach as he approached the back door. He returned two shots at the gunman, who fled.

Williams was wounded in the stomach and Hale received a scalp wound in the gun battle.

United States Marshal for Idaho, George Meffan and his deputy John H. Glenn were killed by 49 year old Pearl R. Hendrickson, who was wanted on a warrant for contempt of court. Deputy Glenn was killed first, shot twice through the upper body as he was talking with Hendrickson at the door of his cabin. U.S. Marshal Meffan was shot through the head as he sat at the wheel of his automobile when he drove up to the cabin about two hours later. Hendrickson was killed when a posse stormed the cabin with automatic weapons and dynamite.

United States Marshal for Idaho, George Meffan and his deputy John H. Glenn were killed by 49 year old Pearl R. Hendrickson, who was wanted on a warrant for contempt of court. Deputy Glenn was killed first, shot twice through the upper body as he was talking with Hendrickson at the door of his cabin. U.S. Marshal Meffan was shot through the head as he sat at the wheel of his automobile when he drove up to the cabin about two hours later.
