Trooper Fontaine Cooper was shot and killed while attempting to arrest a kidnap/murder suspect, Douglas Van Vlack, after a high-speed chase.  He was shot with a .38 automatic pistol in the right eye and died instantly.  Twin Falls Deputy Sheriff Henry Givens was also shot by the suspect and later died. The suspect, Van Vlack, was apprehended and sentenced to death by hanging but committed suicide 15 minutes before his execution by jumping from the top of a 30-foot high cell wall
