On August 24, 1913 in Grace, Idaho, Deputy McFadden was shot by a bootlegger whom he was trying to arrest. Dep. McFadden died hours later on August, 25, 1913.

Days later, the murderer was tracked down and arrested at the Cobre, Nevada Railroad Station. After the prisoner was returned to Idaho to stand trial, he was convicted of the murder of Deputy Sheriff W.J. McFadden. While serving a life sentence in the Idaho Penitentiary, he attempted to escape over the wall. He was shot and killed.
